Deadline For Veterans Who Want To Participate in Special Ceremony, Oct. 25
DALLAS–Veterans who left a high school within the Dallas Independent School District before graduation to serve in World War II are eligible to apply for a high school diploma.
The district will honor those veterans who complete the application process by October 25 at the Veterans Recognition Program and World War II Veterans Diploma Ceremony. The event is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 28, Administration Building, 3700 Ross Ave.
In 1945, Robert Newberry should have been a graduating senior at Woodrow Wilson High School. Instead, he was a member of the U.S. Navy in the middle of World War II. Last November, the district honored Newberry and five other WWII veterans who missed DISD graduations as a result of answering the call to service. More than 65 veterans have received DISD diplomas through this process in the past four years.
Under the Texas Education Code, an eligible veteran is one who:
• is an honorably discharged member of the armed forces for the United States;
• was scheduled to graduate from high school after 1940 and before 1951; and
• left high school before graduation to serve in World War II.
