DISD-Produced TV Show Wins Lone Star Emmy Award

19 Oct 2004

Dallas Schools Television Was Nominated in Six Categories This Year

DALLAS—For the second year in a row, the Dallas Independent School District was the only school district in Texas to receive an Emmy Award from the Lone Star Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Young Strings, a story for School Zone Dallas produced by Dallas Schools Television producer Rosie Suarez, received the Lone Star Emmy for Outstanding Magazine Format program segment at a special awards gala held in Houston on Oct. 16.

"The Emmy Award represents the highest honor in television," said DISD Interim Superintendent Larry Groppel. "For two years now, School Zone Dallas has proven that it is among the finest television programs in Texas. That is a tribute to our staff and students who put together the show."

DSTV, an office in the DISD Communication Services department, produces the award-winning show hosted by district students, and had Emmy nominations in six categories.

The winning entry featured the Young Strings partnership that DISD shares with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Additional assistance on the story was provided by Vicky Mitcham Probeck, Jamaal Jackson, Ernest Conde, Michael Bell, Mark Bergner and Cathy Reaves.

Dallas Schools Television was nominated in six categories this year. School Zone Dallas was nominated in two categories, as were individual stories produced by Suarez and Mark Bergner (CSI: Withers). Nuevos Amigos, DSTV's Spanish language instructional program, and the Think Again PSA campaign also received nominations.
