DISD Students Experience College Life at Eastfield College

25 Oct 2004

Event Offers Students and Parents Taste of College Life

DALLAS—More than 450 Dallas Independent School District students and others interested in the community college experience will be able to get a taste of college life and various careers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays, Nov. 5 and 12, at Eastfield College, 3737 Motley Dr.

While students tour the campus, parents will receive information about financial aid, ways to motivate their children to stay in school, and tips to help their students select middle and high school courses now that will be an advantage to them in college.

The Nov. 5 session, 21st Century College for Young People, targets elementary and middle school students. High school students should attend Minds in Motion on Nov. 12. Both events are sponsored by DISD, in partnership with the Dallas County Community College District, and Eastfield College.

"Most of our students are a product of the district's Majority to Minority Transfer program. After they graduate from high school, they will receive a scholarship to any one of the seven Dallas County Community Colleges," said Judy Thomas, Student Transfer coordinator.

"These events offer students the opportunity to experience college for a day and hopefully get excited about higher education." College tuition for M-M program students is paid for by the Dallas school district.

The Majority to Minority Scholarship Program, established under the district's now-dissolved desegregation plan, will continue for students who are already enrolled in the program until they graduate.

Participants receive a scholarship of up to $1,400 from the Dallas Independent School District. For each year of participation, students receive a $350 scholarship that may be used for college during the regular or summer terms.
