28 Oct 2004

Reading Sessions Will Take Place at Public Libraries as Part of the
Latinos Read 2004 Program

DALLAS–More than 400 Dallas Independent School District students will visit public libraries Friday, Oct. 29, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to listen to local celebrities read.

The initiative is part of the national program Latinos Read, a literary and literacy event that brings Latino celebrities together with the citizens of Dallas to promote reading and early childhood education.

Roberto Alonzo, member of the Texas House of Representatives; Eleno Ornelas, radio broadcaster for the Texas Rangers; Tom Crespo, news anchor for WB 33 News and Sasha Pretto, reporter for Univision, are among the featured celebrities.

Reading sessions will be held at the following public libraries: Pleasant Grove, Casa View, Oak Lawn, North Oak Cliff and the J. Erik Jonsson Library in downtown Dallas.
Latinos Read benefits "Mi Escuelita" Schools and the WB33 Kids Fund, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation.

In its second year, Latinos Read continues to emphasize the importance of reading and staying in school. Ronald McDonald will be available to provide autographs to students.

Latino students represent nearly 60 percent of enrollment in Dallas public schools. The DISD's elementary schools participating in the program are Urban Park, Reinhardt, Gill, Maple Lawn, Hogg and City Park.
