Free Breakfasts at Schools Are Part of 'Texas School Breakfast Week',
Nov. 1-5
DALLAS–In an effort to promote the importance of a balanced nutrition, the Dallas Independent School District will offer free breakfasts to students during Texas School Breakfast Week, Nov. 1 – 5.
"A morning meal does make a difference in the students' academic performance," said Deborah Owens, director, Food Operations and Compliance, Food and Child Nutrition Services Department. "Research findings show that participation in the School Breakfast Program is associated with significantly higher standardized achievement tests scores and reduced absence and tardiness rates."
Among the options offered at the schools are:
• Breakfasts to Go: items in bags for students to take to classrooms or other school areas
• Breakfasts in the Classroom: items provided that can be served in the classroom prior to instructional time
• Special arrangements could be made in the dining areas with cafeteria supervisors to extend serving times and have special seating.
Anne Frank and Onesimo Hernandez are two of the many elementary school planning to
do "Breakfast in the Classroom" and Steven Foster Elementary School plans to do the "Grab & Go" breakfast.
