DISD and Students Celebrate with Reading, Storytelling and a Lecture Series
DALLAS—During the month of November, students in the Dallas Independent School District will be participating in activities in recognition of American Indian Heritage Month.
Designated by presidential proclamation, American Indian HeritageMonth acknowledges the rich cultural heritage of Native Americans and the many contributions they have made to the American culture. The theme for this year's observance is "Weaving a Lifelong Journey with Tradition and Education."
Among the activities planned, F.P. Caillet Elementary School will conduct an Art Reach Storytelling Event called "Our Indian Heritage" on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 8:45 a.m. in the auditorium. The school is located at 3033 Merrell Rd. Students at Umphrey Lee Elementary School will hold weekly activities during the month of November such as storytelling and reading about Native American culture. The school is located at 7808 Racine Dr.
In coordination with other observances, the district has invited David Anthony Tyeeme Clark, assistant professor at the University of Kansas to serve as the keynote speaker in the district's ongoing Cultural Heritage Lecture series that will be held Thursday, Nov. 18, in the Administration Building Auditorium.
Clark's area of expertise is American Studies: Indigenous Nations and American Indian Studies.
