Academy at Hulcy Middle School Targets Community in Area 4
DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District will be giving away food baskets and other prizes during an upcoming Parent Academy at D.A. Hulcy Middle School, 9339 S. Polk St., Saturday, Nov. 20, from 8 a.m. to noon.
The academies provide information to parents to enhance their knowledge about the importance of education to succeed in life as well as information about the district and its programs and services.
The academy is only for parents of students attending schools in Area 4. Parents are invited to register at their respective schools before the event, however, registration will still be accepted on-site.
Under a "thank you" theme, food baskets for the holidays and bicycles will be given away as prizes during the academy to show appreciation to the parents for supporting their children's education. In addition, there also will be a health fair featuring organizations like Bluitt Flowers, a community division of Parkland Hospital, Community Dental, AIDS Interfaith Network, Mosaic Family Services, Carter Blood Care and many more.
"With the holidays coming up, we are giving these gifts and providing health services to thank the parents, grandparents and the community for supporting their children's education by showing up to these academies to receive valuable information," said Mary Lester, senior specialist for Area 4.
Sessions are offered in English and Spanish. Some of the topics include Parenting the Second Time, a workshop designed for grandparents raising grandchildren, DISD 101: How to Broker the DISD System and information on compulsory attendance; how to access district services such as discipline management and truancy reduction; how to address the needs of special needs children; test-taking strategies for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills exam and how to prepare for college.
