DISD and Students Celebrate with Reading, Writing, Contests, Decorating and Food
DALLAS—Students in the Dallas Independent School District will be participating in activities during American Education Week, Nov. 14-20.
This year's theme is "Celebrating the American Dream." "This celebration gives schools an opportunity to highlight the importance of learning and to recognize educators and school staff for their work in helping students achieve academically," said Interim General Superintendent Larry Groppel.
Among the activities planned, R.L. Thornton Elementary School will kick off the week Monday, Nov. 15, and continue through Friday, Nov. 19, by hosting Read to Achieve the American Dream. The school library will be decorated with dragons, knights and princesses to celebrate reading. Reading is Fun books will be distributed to students in grades PK-5 to encourage them to read and achieve their dreams. The school is located at 6011 Old Ox Rd.
Umphrey Lee Elementary School, located at 7808 Racine Dr., will have a schoolwide contest where students will be asked to design a school flag. On Wednesday, Nov. 17, students will wear clothing that depicts their future career; and on Friday, Nov. 19, teachers and staff will wear college sweatshirts or t-shirts to celebrate higher learning.
W.A. Blair Elementary School will have a week-long open house Nov. 15 through Nov. 19 from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Parents and community members are encouraged to visit the school and see education in action," said Principal Evelyn Akram. Parents also are invited to eat lunch with their child.
