Memory of Elementary Volunteer to Live on Through Reading Program for Kids

3 Dec 2004

Volunteers Saturday To Record Books To Tape In Honor Of Former Volunteer Jill Stone

DALLAS—Jill Ruth Feinstein Stone, according to her November obituary in The Dallas Morning News, "devoted much of her life to helping others."

A longtime-volunteer at Vickery Meadows Elementary School in Northeast Dallas, Stone helped bring new programs to the school including the HOSTS language arts program that is now funded by Presbyterian Hospital. Stone also was recognized last year for her volunteer efforts at Benjamin Franklin Middle School.

Stone tutored Vickery Meadows students for three hours every Tuesday and Thursday. She also helped bring about the Fun Saturday program at the school and a coat drive for those less fortunate in the winter months.

Before she died on Nov. 9, 2004, Stone asked that memorials be set up to go to the school and other programs in the area. Many donations have been received and Vickery Meadows Elementary School has used some of the money to buy children's books for their "Book on Tape" program. Through the program, parents can check out a tape and a book and have their child hear the English version while they follow along, thus helping improve their child's reading and English skills.

All books have "In Loving Memory of Jill Stone" written inside. The reading room at the school has been named in her honor as well.

Saturday, Dec. 4, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. volunteers from Temple Emanu-El will be at the school to be recorded as they read through many of the books for the tape program.

Vickery Meadows Elementary, which is located at 6606 Ridgecrest, has an enrollment of 350.

Those who wish to contribute to the memorial for Stone can send funds to the HOSTS Program at Vickery Meadows to purchase additional books.
