DISD and Students Celebrate with Programs, Reading and Contests
DALLAS—The Dallas Independent School District annual celebration to honor the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 1819 North Washington Ave.
The theme for this year's event is Remember, Celebrate, Act!
The celebration will feature performances by David W. Carter High School Choir and the district's Elementary All-City Honors Choir. Keynote speaker is Texas State Rep. Helen Giddings, District 109.
Among other district activities planned, Nancy J. Cochran Elementary School will conduct an art drawing contest celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Students will utilize the style and techniques of African American artists and will be judged on originality and creativity. A winner from each grade will be chosen. The school is located at 6000 Keeneland Pkwy.
Second grade students from Ben Milam Elementary School, located at 4200 McKinney Ave., will perform a tribute to Dr. King by reciting two poems; "Freedom Child" and "Martin Luther King Jr." The performance will take place Thursday, Jan. 13, at 6:30 p.m. during the school's PTA meeting.
Sarah Zumwalt Middle School, located at 2445 E. Ledbetter Dr., will present a small adaptation of King's "I Have a Dream" speech Thursday, Jan. 13, on the public address system at 3:10 p.
