DISD Provides a Hands-On Financial Aid and College Admissions Workshop

24 Jan 2005

Bilingual IRS Employees Will Be Present to Assist in Free Tax Preparation

DALLAS--A college one-stop workshop will provide free advice on the admissions process for high school and college students and their parents, 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Feb. 5, at the University of North Texas-Dallas Campus, 8915 S. Hampton Rd.

The event is sponsored by various universities from the area and by "Las Llaves Del Éxito," to provide college information to Hispanic students and their families.

"Applying for college and financial aid can be an overwhelming and intimidating process, especially for our first generation college students and their parents," said René Martinez, executive director-Dropout Prevention and Community Outreach department. "That is why the district has partnered with the Dallas County Community College District, area universities and nonprofit agencies to take our students and their parents step-by-step through the admissions and financial aid process."
Personalized assistance on college admissions, financial aid and scholarships will be available in Spanish and English.

Participants interested in receiving help with their college admission forms should bring an official high school or college transcript with ACT/SAT scores, if available; social security numbers of the applicant and applicant's parents (if available); driver's license or matrícula consular; permanent resident alien card (if available); W-2 forms issued to the applicant and/or parents; the 2004 untaxed income records of the applicant and applicant's parents and a recent copy of their 2004 bank statement.

To further assist the students with the process, bilingual IRS volunteers will be present to help attendees complete and file their income tax for financial aid preparation.

Transportation will be provided for students who attend school in the district's Area 4 and Area 6 high schools. For information, call (972) 925-3970 or (214) 860-2432.
