DISD Invites Parents To Visit Their Child's School

DALLAS— Dallas Independent School District parent/teacher conferences are Feb. 28, for high schools, March 1 for elementary schools, and March 3 for middle school students from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The spring parent/teacher conferences are scheduled to give parents the opportunity to visit teachers in their children's classroom environment.

Parents are encouraged to attend these meetings to forge better communication between teachers and parents. The conferences also offer an opportunity to talk about the student's progress, classroom activities and teacher's expectations.

"If you are a working parent who can't meet during regular hours, make arrangements to set up a new time that is accommodating for both of you," said Sylvia Lopez, director of counseling for the district.

Questions to ask are varied and include, What kinds of tests are given?, What do the tests tell about my child's progress?, Does my child get along with others?, What are my child's best and worst subjects?, Is my child working up to his or her ability?. Other key questions are, Has my child missed any classes other than the ones I contacted the school about?, Have you noticed any sudden changes in the way my child acts?

The best conferences are those in which teacher and parent stay calm and work together for the benefit of the child.
