DISD Students Celebrate With Reading, School Programs, Food and Field Trips to Universities
DALLAS–With this year's theme "Every Reason to Succeed," hundreds of educators and students across the state and in the Dallas Independent School District will recognize the successes and achievements of public education by inviting their communities to take a first-hand look into their educational programs during Texas Public Schools Week, Feb. 28 – March 4.
Kendall Hassee, DISD's 2004 Teacher of the Year, says public education offers diverse opportunities for students and teachers. "Students as well as teachers have great access to advanced courses, scholarships and programs."
Hassee, a teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School with eight years of experience in teaching, says her experience has taught her that a great number of students from public schools appreciate the devotion of their teachers. "Many of our students come back throughout the years and thank us for educating them and for walking that extra mile to make sure that they become the leaders of the future."
Texas Public Schools Week was established in 1954 by the Masonic Lodges in Texas to recognize contributions made by the state's free system of education.
Below are some Texas Public Schools Week events in the Dallas Independent School District:
• On Wednesday, March 2, the "Cat in the Hat" will visit students at Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary, 7800 Umphress Road, at 1:30 p.m. for a book parade and reading session.
• Anson Jones Elementary sixth grade students will take a field trip to The University of Texas at Dallas, Wednesday, March 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Thursday, March 3 at 1:30 p.m., current and former principals at Sequoyah Learning Center will be honored during a program hosted by students and faculty members.
