10 DISD Teachers Awarded Grants
DALLAS—Grants were presented during a recent Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees meeting to teachers winners of the American Airlines Mini-Grants.
The American Airlines Mini-Grant program was initiated in 1985 and made possible by a $100,000 grant from American Airlines. The program is administered with the approval of the Board of Trustees by the American Airlines Mini Grant Committee, a panel of DISD teachers and administrators selected from each of the eight areas of the district.
Teachers submitted proposals to enhance education in the classroom and received up to $1,000 each to fund the projects.
A $1,000 winning proposal came from Eladio R. Martinez Learning Center teacher Eduardo Gomez-Cornejo for Chess for the Development of Social Skills and Academic Improvement. Another $1,000 proposal was from Vickery Meadows Elementary School teacher Ximena A. Fennell for a parent–child reading program.
An additional eight grants to teachers were announced. Jon C. Green, John W. Carpenter Elementary School, $939.90 for The Study of Systems and Their Components; Donna Mays, David W. Carter High School, $924.06 for Seek and You Will Find; Valarie Cole, Bryan Adams High School, $857.80 for Highly Effective Freshmen; Linda Williams, Arthur Kramer Elementary School, $560.06 for Barney Bear, World Traveler; Donna Barnhart-Jones, George Washington Carver Learning Center, $965.70 for Little Hands, Curious Minds, Big Imaginations; Amanda Ledwon Osbo, L.G. Pinkston High School, $546.20 for Understanding the Federal Reserve Bank as it Pertains to U.S. History; Mary Jessie Morin, Casa View Elementary School, $979.00 for Listening and Ready to Read and Rosari Birmingham, Arthur Kramer Elementary School, $237.90 for Monarch Mania.
