Tuskegee Airmen of World War II to Visit DISD Schools

First African-Americans To Be Trained by the United States Air Force

DALLAS–Several Dallas Independent School District schools will receive a visit from Tuskegee Airmen of World War II, Tuesday March 29 and Wednesday, March 30.

The airmen were the first African-Americans to be trained by the United States Air Force to fly missions during World War II.

After studying about the Tuskegee Airmen, students entered an essay–writing contest sponsored by the district's Reading and Language Arts Department. Essay topics included "Why I Would Like to Be An Airmen" and "Why Would I Like Tuskegee Airmen to Visit Our School."

The Tuskegee Airmen will share with the students their experiences of having a major part in the military history of our nation by being the first African American pilots in the armed forces of the United States.
