DISD Names 2005-2006 Teacher of the Year Finalists

District's Annual Teacher of the Year Ice Cream Social Set for April 14

DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District has named four finalists for the 2005-2006 Teacher of the Year awards program.

The four finalists and eight semifinalists will be honored, along with the teachers of the year from all 219 campuses, at the district's annual Teacher of the Year Ice Cream Social at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at the Adam's Mark Hotel, 400 N. Olive St. The event is sponsored by DISD and Voyager Expanded Learning.

A committee of judges selected the semifinalists and finalists based on interviews and essay packets that described their teaching philosophy, professional background and interactions with students, parents and members of the community. The finalists are:

• Jennifer Bramhall, Ascher Silberstein Elementary School. Bramhall, who teaches prekindergarten, has six years of teaching experience, all at Silberstein.

• Elizabeth Garrett Bravo, George Bannerman Dealey Montessori Academy. Bravo teaches fine arts. She has been in her current position 11 years and has a total of 24 years of teaching experience.

• Phyllis R. Golden, Ronald E. McNair Elementary School. Golden teaches fifth grade reading and math. She has been in her present position five years and has 16 years of teaching experience.

• Shannon M. Pugh, W. T. White High School. Pugh teaches social studies to students in grades 10th – 12th. She has been in her current position eight years and has 11 years of teaching experience.

The semifinalists are:

• Melissa Elmore – Nancy Moseley Elementary School
• John W. Harlan – Lincoln Humanities/Communications Magnet High School
• Gregory C. Lendvay – Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School
• Robert Glen Martin – School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center
• Pennie Moreno – Anne Frank Elementary School
• Kent Smith – William Lipscomb Elementary School
• Gil C. Thomas - Rosemont Elementary School
• Miosha Woods – Thomas C. Marsh Middle School

The Dallas Independent School District 2005-2006 Teacher of the Year will be announced at a banquet May 19. The winner will receive $5,000 and will represent the district in the regional competition.
