Information provided will answer parents' questions regarding program requirements
DALLAS—Dallas Independent School District Advanced Academic Services will conduct parent orientation meetings at five South Dallas high schools April 18, April 25-26 and April 28 for parents of K-12 students who wish to learn more about student participation in pre-advanced and advanced placement classes.
Conducted by district AP lead teachers and campus administrative personnel, the workshops offer a one-hour overview of the advanced placement program and its benefits plus information about college costs, financial aid and scholarships.
"We hope to foster community awareness of these fine programs and to increase participation in Pre-AP and AP courses which begin in Grade 7 and continue through Grade 12," said Suzee Oliphint, executive director—Advanced Academic Services. "The end goal of these courses is not only to earn college credit hours, but also to develop superior reading, writing, math, science and critical thinking skills which result in higher SAT scores and increased college options."
Currently, students and counselors are making course selections for the 2005-2006 school year classes, and these meetings will offer an opportunity for parents to discover more about advanced academic programs available to DISD youth.
