Event Scheduled for Friday, April 29
DALLAS–Dallas Independent School District officials will gather for the re-naming ceremony of the Maya Angelou High School at 1 p.m. Friday, April 29, 912 S. Ervay.
The school, which specializes in offering guidance, health services and support to pregnant teens and pregnant moms, is being re-named after poet Maya Angelou.
Angelou, who is among the first African-American women to hit the bestsellers list, was also a teen mom at the age of 18. Angelou went on to distinguish herself as an educator, historian, actress, playwright, civil rights activist, producer and director.
Program participants include: Carolyn Bailey, DISD Area 5 superintendent; Ron Price and Lew Blackburn, board trustees and Jim Scales, deputy superintendent.
The school's annual Family First forum will follow the ceremony. The forum is an open session where community agencies offer information and resources that could help the students become more effective parents.
Participating agencies include DISD Parent Involvement Department, Parkland Healthy Start Unit, Medicaid, Southwestern Medical Center, Promise House, Dallas Public Library and YWCA.
