DALLAS–Dallas Independent School District officials will join PTA and community members for the renaming ceremony of the Amelia Flores Youth and Family Center at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 9441 Lingo Lane.
Formerly known as the White Rock Youth and Family Center at Bryan Adams, the facility provides services to meet the physical and mental health needs of students and their families. Student groups from Bryan Adams and Sunset high schools will provide performances specially designed for the event. Lois Parrott, Board of Trustees president, will join Mavis Knight, State Board of Education trustee, in commemorating the life of service of Amelia G. Flores and unveiling the new name of the facility. Daughter Kim Flores will present the first two Amelia G. Flores Scholarships of $500 each to graduating Bryan Adams students.
Flores, who served as the first Hispanic president of the Dallas Council of PTAs, was a long time volunteer and community leader. Prior to her death in 2004, she served on the National PTA Urban Initiative Forum, and as director of Parent Leadership for the Magnet Schools of Texas. Under Gov. Ann Richards, she was named to the Elementary and Secondary Title II Commission.
A valued leader in local and state PTA, Flores had been recognized with PTA Life Membership, National PTA Life Membership, and a PTA Extended Service Award. In addition, she was the first recipient of the Ann Yorstoun Volunteer Award in Dallas for Exemplary Volunteer Services. Dallas Council of PTAs presented Flores the Anthionette Hardeman Volunteer Award. The Simon and Shuster book Mama: Latina Woman and Their Mothers by Maria Perez-Brown featured Flores along with her daughter Kim.
