School Named for African American Pioneer in Early Childhood Education

DALLAS– Dallas Independent School District and city officials were joined today by community members in breaking ground for Jimmie Tyler Brashear Elementary School and Hampton-Illinois Branch Library, located at 2959 S. Hampton Rd.

District 6 Trustee, Hollis Brashear (no relation), whose district includes the new school, said its future students can be proud of the outstanding education legacy of Jimmie Tyler Brashear, who was the district's first African American administrator.

"A granddaughter of slaves, she was a pioneer in every sense of the word," said Trustee Brashear, citing a career filled with accomplishments including two earned master's degrees, teaching positions at two colleges, and 38 years of service to DISD.

The 89,000 square-foot-school, expected to be complete in summer 2006, will serve students in grades Pre-K to six. The school-library project is the third joint construction project for the city and school district. Earlier joint ventures included Arcadia Park Elementary/Branch Library and Randall Park athletic complex.

Contributing to the design and construction of the school-library project are RBDR Architects; program manager, Jacobs/Pegasus JV; and builder, SEDALCO.
