DALLAS—More than 100 Dallas Independent School District students participating in The Black Academy of Arts and Letters Summer Cultural Enrichment program will perform in the musical, "Wizzin" which opens Friday, July 8, at the Dallas Convention Center Theatre Complex (Corner of Canton and Akard Streets).

The academy's cultural enrichment program, now in its third year, brings together district students in a production by actor/director Akin Babatunde based on the popular Broadway musical, The Wiz. Additional performances are Saturday, July 9, at 1 p.m. and at 4 p.m. in the Naomi Bruton Theatre at the convention center.

Admission is free, however tickets must be picked up at the academy's box office between10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday between noon and 4 p.m.

"This is a wonderful experience for young students who are interested in careers in the arts with specific focus in the Theater," said Curtis King, the academy's founder, president and the show's producer.

"The students are taking intense classes taught by seasoned professionals in theater, music, dance, costume, lighting and make-up. When the audience sees the final production, they are going to be amazed at what these students have been able to accomplish in such a short period of time," said King.

The project also is supported in part by Frances E. Williams Artists Grant Program and Ace USA Insurance Company.
