25 New Refugee Families To Enroll In District Schools For 2005-2006 School Year

DALLAS–As part of its role in helping foreign students adapt to life in the United States, the Dallas Independent School District's Margaret and Gilbert Herrera Student Intake Center will host an orientation day Friday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., to provide information and resources to 25 new refugee students and their families.

Students between the ages of 5-17, natives from countries such as Liberia, Congo and Sudan, will receive orientation about different services and programs offered by DISD and about the district's guidelines, such as the dress code and student code of conduct.

"Giving a warm welcome, we hope to enable the refugee children and their families so they may experience a successful transition into the Texas educational system," said Judith Tomes, director, Margaret and Gilbert Herrera Student Intake Center.

Since the Intake Center opened its doors in July 2003, it has enrolled more than 5,000 immigrant students to DISD.

A second orientation day for refugee students has been scheduled for Friday, July 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 972-749-5760. The center is located at 2617 N. Henderson.
