Some High Schools Also Will Wear Uniforms
DALLAS—The Dallas Independent School District student uniform dress code policy will take effect for the upcoming 2005-2006 school year.
The district's dress code, established by the Board of Trustees in 2004, is designed to teach grooming and hygiene, instill discipline, prevent disruptions, avoid safety hazards and teach respect for authority.
Uniforms will be required for students in pre-kindergarten through grade eight when classes begin Aug. 15. On campuses where the board has approved the use of mandatory uniforms, students will wear the school-approved uniform unless a parent or legal guardian files an objection requesting the student to be exempt from the mandatory uniform requirement or asks that student be transferred to a school where uniforms are not required.
Eleven high schools will require uniforms for the 2005-2006 school year.
The district's standards for appropriate attire such as style and colors are:
* Jackets, cardigans and sweaters – must be worn over an approved shirt: no hoods for middle school students. The colors are solid khaki, solid navy, solid black or solid white.
• Skirts, jumpers, shorts and capri pants – knee-length or longer and the colors are solid khaki, solid navy or solid black.
• School Uniforms Requirements for Pre-K Through Grade Eight XXXX ADD1
•Shirts and blouses – straight, button-down, or turtleneck collar; long or short sleeves; may be polo-style and must be tucked into pants or skirt.
• Slacks and pants – pleated or flat-front; fastened at the waist; belt must be worn with pants that have belt loops. The colors are solid khaki, solid navy or solid black.
• Shoes – athletic shoes, loafers, dress shoes, other closed-toe and closed heel shoes; closed toe and open-heel mules.
Not allowed under the uniform policy are blue jeans, low-cut or low-rise pants, sagging slacks or pants, clothing with manufacturer's trademarks larger than one inch and clothing with non-DISD logos and insignias such as those of professional sports teams.
