DISD and Dallas Police Department Join Forces to Remind Drivers to Slow Down

9 Aug 2005

Classes in DISD Schools Begin Aug. 15

DALLAS—With less than a week left before classes begin, the Dallas Independent School District and the Dallas Police Department will make a call to drivers to observe traffic laws and reduce speed in school zone areas at a news conference at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Cesar Chavez Learning Center, 1710 N. Carroll.

District Superintendent Michael Hinojosa, Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle and DISD Chief of Police Manny Vasquez will be present. Classes in the DISD begin Aug. 15 and more than 160,000 students districtwide will head for school.

Recent statistics showed that more than 1.3 million Texas children a day ride school buses, which continue to be the safest form of highway transportation--fewer than 1 percent of traffic accidents in the state involve them.

The most common time for accidents is when school buses are loading or unloading students. According to the National School Bus Loading and Unloading Survey, most children injured or killed while getting on or off buses are under the age of 10.
