Additional Tax Roll Receipts Provides DISD Trustees to Approve Teacher Raises

15 Aug 2005

Item To Be Discussed During Wednesday Committee of the Whole Meeting

DALLAS—During the Wednesday Committee of the Whole meeting with the Dallas Independent School District's Board of Trustees, Superintendent Michael Hinojosa will recommend a $650 pay raise for district teachers and professional support staff, a $500 raise for support staff, and $250 for campus leadership such as principals, assistant principals, deans, and technical and central staff.

The district also is restoring $50 in stipends for school supplies that had been cut to $200 and will be returned to a full $250.

The raises are possible because of tax revenues provided to the district based on certified tax rolls that were higher than the original estimates, which yielded more than $10 million in additional revenue for DISD. Combined with other funding, a total of $11.7 million would be spent on the raises if approved by the board later this month.

"While this is not a huge windfall, in a year when we previously were not able to provide teachers and staff with anything, we hope that an additional boost will be appreciated," Hinojosa said. "Obviously, we would like to provide teachers and staff with the ability to remain competitive with their salaries and to keep up with the rising cost of living, but our hands are tied and funds are limited."

If approved by trustees, the funds would be dispersed on a 12-month basis and not in one lump sum.
