56 High School Students Are Members of Teen Board
DALLAS–Representing the Dallas Independent School District students, 56 high school students will gather for the first Teen Board meeting for the 2005-2006 school year Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the board room of the School Administration Building, 3700 Ross Ave.
Teen Board Members attend 28 comprehensive DISD schools and are junior and senior class presidents.
"Teen Board provides an avenue of participation and involvement of student leaders in the district," said Judy Johnston, director-Districtwide Activities. "Students share with peers their campus success and concerns."
Serving as mediators between the students and the DISD Board of Trustees, the primary objective of Teen Board is to offer input on concerns to the general superintendent from the students' perspective. The meeting's agenda includes discussions of community service projects and review of guidelines and recommendations established by past teen board members.
"Last year, Teen Board sponsored very successful donation drives and plans are on the way to achieve the same goal this year," said Johnston. "Since many of Hurricane Katrina's evacuees enrolled in DISD may not return to Louisiana, school supplies will be a continuing need, and as the weather changes, coats will also be needed."
Teen Board meetings for 2005-2006 are scheduled for the following dates: Wednesday, Sept. 14; Thursday, Oct. 13; Wednesday, Nov. 16; Thursday, Dec. 9; Wednesday, Jan. 18; Wednesday, Feb. 15; Wednesday, March 23 and Thursday, April 27.
