DALLAS—The Dallas Independent School District is closing in on its first 1,000 new enrollees from storm-ravaged locations as a result of Hurricane Katrina, the district reported late Friday afternoon.

As of Friday at 3:30 p.m., the district had enrolled 958 new students from storm-damaged areas. A total of 132 schools now are reporting students enrolled from the disaster. There are 217 schools in the district.

DISD began a concentrated effort to enroll students from the Dallas Convention Center and Reunion Arena on Tuesday of this week. Students who also are residing in hotels, churches and other locations throughout the city have been asked to enroll at the school closest to where they have been staying.
