DISD School Dedicated to Helping Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts

14 Sep 2005

Events to Collect Food, Clothing and Money Continue

DALLAS– The Dallas Independent School District campuses are collecting food, clothing and money in a humanitarian effort to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

As of Wednesday, Sept. 14, about 1,590 students had enrolled in 132 district campuses. The wrath of Hurricane Katrina has brought together students and staff to implement the act of kindness and compassion by doing what is needed to bring comfort and hope to the evacuees.

"This is a selfless act on the part of the DISD family. It shows that people are always willing to assist others in a time of need," said Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. "When people truly work together, anything can be achieved. Life is about helping others."

Among the continuing relief efforts, on Thursday, Sept.15, a group of students and teachers from Daniel Webster Elementary School, 3815 S. Franklin St., will be delivering some goods collected through donations to the Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Church, 1808 W. Camp Wisdom Rd. The items, which include canned goods, pillows, blankets, clothing, shoes, toiletries, towels, stuffed animals, hand sanitizer, hairbrushes, combs, baby diapers and wipes, storage bags (gallon size), will be loaded into vehicles at the school at 10 a.m., and then delivered to the church. While at the church, students will meet with a group of evacuees who are placed at the church.
