22 Sep 2005

More than $46,000 Will Be Presented to the American Red Cross for the Katrina Relief Efforts

DALLAS–The first in a series of Dallas Independent School District parent academies will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 24, at Bryan Adams High School, 2101 Millmar Drive.

A donation of $46,863 from all schools in Area 4 will be presented to the American Red Cross at 8:15 a.m. to benefit Katrina evacuees.

Under the theme, "Academic Success With Parental Involvement," the program will offer information to parents so they can enhance their knowledge about the importance of education to succeed in life.

"The academies are a vehicle for parents to obtain information about critical issues in education today, ways they can help their children with homework, and tips to become knowledgeable of the district's policies and procedures," said Vickie Mitchell, Area 4 superintendent.

Offered in English and Spanish, the academies provide parents basic information about the district and its programs and services. In addition, they are designed to meet the specific needs of parents residing within each community. The first academy targets the north Dallas community. Upcoming academies will be offered in schools throughout the city. Parents are encouraged to attend the academy closest to where their child attends school.

Workshops to be offered include overview of DISD policies and programs, beginning computer classes, tips on performing better on tests, gang awareness, the importance of attending parent conferences and information about resources available to help students pursue a higher education.
