More DISD Seniors Are National Merit Semifinalists for 2005-2006 School Year

A Total of 17 Seniors, Attending Six DISD Schools, Were Selected as Semifinalists

DALLAS–Seventeen Dallas Independent School District high school seniors have been selected among the 16,000 semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program for the 2005 – 2006 school year.

"We are proud of the accomplishments of these student and we also appreciate the hard work and dedication of teachers, counselors and parents," said DISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. "It is the district's goal to increase the number of students who take advanced placement courses and pursue higher education."

W. T. White High School was the school in DISD with more semifinalists this year, six students accomplished the goal. "As principal, I feel honored for the success that these students have reached," said Joy Barnhart, principal at W. T. White High School.
"Their hard work paid off."

The other five DISD schools who have students in the semifinalists' list are Bryan Adams High School, School of Science and Engineering at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, School for the Talented and Gifted Magnet at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, and Woodrow Wilson High School.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recognizes academically outstanding black youth and provides them scholarships. Students may enter the program by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and meeting other pre-established criteria.

The 17 DISD students who will now compete for scholarships are:

• Naomi L. Bardoff - School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center
• Lauren Hollis - School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center
• Mary Katherine Mcelroy - School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center
• Rachel K. Porter - School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center
• Claudia A. Whitten - School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center
• Alex O. Anthony - Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts
• Andre P. Azzolini - W. T. White High School
• Ashley E. Meroney - W. T. White High School
• Benjamin A. Meyer - W. T. White High School
• Nicholas A. Saltarelli - W. T. White High School
• David P. Schieffer - W. T. White High School

The 1,300 students that advance into the finalists will be notified in late January.
