Activities and Programs to Honor Military Veterans Scheduled Throughout DISD Schools
DALLAS–Dallas Independent School District students and staff will host activities and programs Friday, Nov. 11, throughout the district's schools to honor military veterans for their sacrifices made for the sake of freedom.
DISD has more than 300 employees who are military veterans and currently a number of district employees are or have family members serving in the military.
"It is important that our district students and staff recognize the sacrifices made by military veterans and that they learn firsthand about the value of freedom and the liberties we enjoy in this great country," said Superintendent Michael Hinojosa.
Dozens of DISD students, members of the JROTC, will be participating in the city's Veterans Day Parade Friday at 11 a.m., at Dallas City Hall.
Below are other Veterans Day events in DISD schools:
• Pleasant Grove Elementary School, 1614 N. St. Augustine Road, will host a Veterans Day Program Friday, Nov. 11, at 8:45 a.m. Military veteran and assistant superintendent for DISD Equity and School Choice Department, Juan Flores, will be the guest speaker. The program will feature a flag raising ceremony, student performances and a salute to the veterans.
• Students from Edward Titche Elementary School, 9560 Highfield Drive, will be making cards from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., to send to military veterans who are in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Dallas. The students also will be packing snack boxes to send to soldiers overseas in honor of school employees who have family members serving in the military.
• Fifth and sixth grade students at L.L. Hotchkiss Elementary School, 6929 Town North Drive, will host an assembly at 1:30 p.m., to honor Ted Jacobs, a sixth grade teacher at the school who currently is on military duty. Jacobs, who is home for two weeks before returning to duty, will share photos of the time he spent on duty and will dedicate and present the school with a flag he brought from Iraq.
