Renovations Underway for Eighty-four-Year-Old School
DALLAS-Dallas Independent School District officials held a groundbreaking ceremony today for the new addition at North Dallas High School located at 3120 North Haskell Avenue.
Students, elected officials and alumni joined Ron Price, District 9 trustee, for the ceremony.
"Today we bridge the past to the present," said Price. "A lot has changed in this area in 80 years but one thing that is consistent is that North Dallas has remained the place where the world comes together. Students who graduate are independent learners, creative problem solvers and productive citizens."
North Dallas High School was built in 1921, and in recent years has become the epicenter for international students in the neighborhood. Currently there are students from more than 42 countries enriching the school with their unique cultures and customs.
The three-story 31,500-square-foot building will add 19 classrooms, a computer lab, and administration offices. Simultaneously, the high school will undergo extensive renovations. The stand-alone addition will complement the Romanesque Revival style of the current school, also undergoing renovations including an expansion to the cafeteria. The 84-year-old school also will receive upgrades to technology, HVAC and roofing. Total cost for the complete project is estimated at $10.9 million.
Frank J. Meier Architects designed the new addition, Jacobs Pegasus is the program manager and MDI, Inc. General Contractors is the builder.
In January 2002, DISD passed the largest education bond program in the history of Texas. The $1.37 billion program is funding 21 new schools, almost 60 additions that include early childhood additions to present schools, and renovations to nearly every campus in the district. Contractors are working on more than 140 school facilities, including new schools, additions to schools, and renovations to schools. An additional bond program ceremony will be held Tuesday, Nov. 15 for Frank Guzick Elementary School, 5000 Berridge Lane.
