DALLAS—The Dallas Independent School District will rename the Pearl C. Anderson Middle Learning Center library in honor of Texas Legislator Helen Giddings at 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 5, at 3400 Garden Lane.

"What a wonderful gesture to rename one of our libraries in honor of someone who has been such a passionate advocate for education," said DISD Trustee Ron Price. "It is also quite appropriate because Ms. Giddings has focused much of her advocacy on reading."

Giddings, a lifelong resident of Dallas County, is a community leader, successful entrepreneur, and is currently serving a seventh-term as a member of the Texas State House of Representatives. She is chair of the Business and Industry Committee and a member of the House Higher Education and House Administration committees in addition to chairing the Research and Oversight Counsel.

Her legislation on reading resulted in the first Texas license plate designed by a child. She successfully authored legislation on dyslexia and other learning disabilities as well as programs that address adult education. In recognition of her dedication to education, the Concerned DeSoto Citizens group established a scholarship in her honor.

Among other accomplishments, Giddings created and helped pass groundbreaking legislation that requires every child in Texas to receive a course in CPR once in their high school career.

A $5,000 donation from Nielsen Media Research will be presented at the event.
