Adult Basic Education Program to Hold Graduation Ceremony for GED Students

5 Dec 2005

College Reps Will Offer Information to Graduates on Higher Education Options

DALLAS—More than 150 Adult Basic Education students will walk across the stage at Skyline High School, 7777 Forney Road, to receive their certificates of achievement Saturday, Dec. 10, at 11 a.m.

Most of the graduating class, who earned their GED during the summer and fall of 2005,
is representative of the student population in the Dallas Independent School District's Adult Basic Education program.

"From their late teens to their mid-60s, including a husband and wife who decided to get their GED and accomplished that goal together, our students are proof that an education is valuable and possible no matter the age of the student," said Martin Riojas, director–Adult Basic Education program. "We are very proud of our students who have worked hard to obtain their GED, as well as of those who have made outstanding strides to improve their English skills."

DISD Board President Lois Parrott will present the certificates. The keynote speaker will be Jennifer Wimbish, President of Cedar Valley College, one of the Dallas County Community Colleges.

"The Adult Basic Education program always encourages students to pursue their education beyond the GED," said Riojas. "To help students make the transition, college representatives from the Dallas County Community Colleges will be available after the graduation ceremony to provide information to the students and to their families on college admissions and programs."

The district's Adult Basic Education program serves more than 11,000 students in Dallas and Rockwall county.
