DISD Hosts "Stop the Violence" Townhall Meeting

6 Dec 2005

Meeting is a District and Dallas County partnership to eliminate youth violence

DALLAS–As part of a collective effort, the Dallas Independent School District will host a "Stop the Violence" town hall meeting, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, 1201 E. Eighth St.

State Senator Royce West, DISD administrators and law enforcement officials will address parents, students and community members.

The meeting is part of the "It's About Our Community" campaign, sponsored by Dallas County citizens, elected officials, school superintendents, business leaders and law enforcement representatives to promote education and eliminate youth violence in schools and communities.

"The safety of students at school and school activities is a high priority for DISD and the greater Dallas community," said DISD Deputy Superintendent Jim Scales. "It is a proactive measure for DISD to join efforts with citizens and community groups to ensure safety for our youth."

As part of the campaign, municipal law enforcement agencies have met with school police officers, school administrators and public officials, to address youth and gang violence and to develop an organized approach to better ensure safety in schools.

Local businesses have joined the task force and are supporting the effort by donating money to fund the initiative.

The "It's About Our Community" campaign aims at bringing the community together to make Dallas County safer, and to provide citizens a better place to live, work, play and learn.
