Alan Varney Recognized for His Creativity in the Classroom
DALLAS–Dallas Independent School District teacher Alan Varney has been nominated for the 2006 Disney Teacher Award.
Varney is a ninth grade, pre-AP World Geography teacher at Skyline Career Development Center.
"I feel absolutely honored that a student took the time to nominate me for this wonderful award," Varney said. "This proves to me that Skyline has some of the best, brightest, and most thoughtful students in Texas," said Varney.
Since 1989, Disney Teacher Awards have been presented to educators who construct learning environments where students and teachers alike explore, imagine and engage in a variety of stimulating ideas and experiences. Specifically, the program honors those teachers whose approaches exemplify creativity in teaching and who inspire a joy of learning in their students.
"I constantly brag to other principals in our district about the faculty we have at Skyline," principal Leslie Williams said. "Mr. Varney's nomination for this prestigious award validates my firm belief that Skyline attracts the most talented teachers in the state. I am extremely proud that a teacher of Mr. Varney's caliber choose to practice his profession at our school."
A committee comprised of education experts from around the country will review the applications and select the 2006 Disney Teacher Award Honorees.
The Honorees will be announced in late spring and celebrated at a red-carpet awards gala in July. Each honoree will receive $10,000, a $5,000 grant for their schools and a six-day professional development institute with their principals at the Walt Disney World Resort.
