DISD Students Collect More Than $44,000

Funds donated to 32 Non-Profit Agencies

DALLAS-Dallas Independent School District students and Superintendent Michael Hinojosa held a news conference today at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 9, to announce the recipients of more than $44,000 collected during the Common Cents campaign.

Common Cents is a student-led coin collection effort designed to raise money for charity and non-profit organizations while encouraging good citizenship and social responsibility in schoolchildren. Overall, district students have collected almost $260,000 in coins since they started the fund raising efforts eight years ago.

Students from 43 DISD elementary, middle and high schools made presentations to more that 32 local non-profit organizations in the Administration Building Auditorium, 3700 Ross Ave.

Dallas philanthropist Louise Gartner brought the Common Cents program to DISD schools in 1998 to help teach young people about the importance of giving back to society.
