Sidney Lanier Vanguard Students Participate in National Traffic Safety Study

13 Feb 2006

Students win contest sponsored by the Injury Prevention Center of Greater Dallas

DALLAS- Students from Sidney Lanier Vanguard for the Expressive Arts will hold an assembly to receive prizes for winning a national traffic safety study at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 14, 1400 Walmsley.

Students participated in a study conducted by the Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety (ACTS).

A report titled "Tween Traffic Safety: Influencing eight to 12 year olds to Sit Safely Buckled in a Back Seat" will be released on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The report results are based on the outcomes of pilot projects in Joplin, Missouri and Dallas, Texas.

More than one "tween between the ages of eight through 12" is killed in a motor vehicle crash every day yet little focus has been given to this age group in the past. Children are safest when they are properly restrained in a back seat. Unfortunately, belt use decreases and front seat use increases as children grow older.

Because tweens are tomorrow's drivers, new safety tips are needed to find ways to help them develop the lifelong habit of buckling up now.
