Applications for curriculum, hardship, and school choice/PEG transfers also are available on-line
DALLAS—The period to solicit curriculum, hardship, and school choice/Public Education Grant transfers for 2006-07 in the Dallas Independent School District starts March 1 and will continue through May 24, 2006.
Several options are available through the Student Transfer Program which allow parents the freedom to choose schools they believe best meet the interests and/or needs of their children, as long as there is available space in the chosen school.
• The Curriculum Transfer program option gives any student in any grade the opportunity to transfer to the nearest school with available space that offers a course or program not available in his/her home school. Applications for this program will be accepted until the last day of school.
• The Hardship Transfer program option gives any student in any grade the option of attending a school other than his/her neighborhood school, when space is available. The student, however, must have documented personal or family circumstances that prevent him/her from attending the home school.
• Two School Choice Transfer programs give students the opportunity to transfer to higher performing schools. The application for the Public Education Grant Transfer program runs through May 24. Public Education Grant transfers may only be from lower achieving PEG schools as identified by the Texas Education Agency to non- Public Education Grant schools with space. This year, the application period for the School Choice/No Child Left Behind Transfer program will be during the first six weeks of school.
"District students will bring home a student transfer brochure in early March that will detail all the options available and the requirements," said Judy Thomas, student transfer coordinator. The brochure is printed in English and Spanish. Further information and transfer applications also will be available on the district's Web site at www.dallasisd.org/parent_student/transfers.htm.
