Filing Period Information for Special and General DISD Board Elections Listed

28 Feb 2006

Filing deadline for the special election is March 7; March 13 is the deadline for the general election

DALLAS—The filing period for two open seats on the Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees ends March 7, with only one person having filed to run so far.

A special election has been called for District 6 in Southwest Dallas, and for District 8, which encompasses Love Field, Northwest Dallas, and Central Dallas. In February, Trustee Hollis Brashear, who currently represents District 6, announced his resignation, and the District 8 seat became vacant with the death of Trustee Joe May.

As of Feb. 28, Joe L. Tave was the only one who had filed to run for the District 6 seat, and no one had filed to run for the District 8 seat in the special election.

General election filing period for Districts 1, 3, and 9 closes March 13 at 5 p.m As of Feb. 28, Bernadette Nutall was the only candidate to run for the District 9 seat held by incumbent Trustee Ron Price. Trustees Edwin Flores, District 1, and Lois Parrott, District 3, have filed to run for the seats they now hold.

Candidate packets are available for pickup weekdays at the DISD Board Office, 3700 Ross Avenue between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. To qualify for a board seat, a candidate must be 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled, a registered voter, a Texas resident for 12 months, and a resident of the trustee district for six months. A list of eligibility requirements is included in the packet.

All of the Dallas board trustees are elected from single-member districts to serve rotating, three-year terms of office. Serving without compensation, DISD board members are charged with hiring the superintendent, approving the annual budget, adopting policy and evaluating district performance.
