Minds Will Be in Motion When Students Attend College for a Day

26 Feb 2006

Event offers DISD students and parents taste of college life

DALLAS – About 200 Dallas Independent School District students will be able to get a taste of college life and various careers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, March 3, at Mountain View College, 4849 West Illinois Avenue.

While students tour the campus, parents will receive information about financial aid, ways to motivate their children to stay in school, and tips to help students select middle and high school courses now that will be an advantage to them in college.

The event is sponsored by DISD, in partnership with the Dallas County Community College District, and Mountain View College.

"The students who attend are part of the district's Majority to Minority Transfer program. After they graduate from high school, they will receive a scholarship to any one of the seven Dallas County Community Colleges," said Judy Thomas, Student Transfer coordinator. "This event, now in its 12th year, offers students the opportunity to experience college for a day and hopefully get excited about higher education."

College tuition for M-M program students is paid for by the Dallas school district. The Majority to Minority Scholarship Program, established under the district's now-dissolved desegregation plan, will continue for students who are already enrolled in the program until they graduate.

Participants receive a scholarship of up to $1,400 from the Dallas Independent School District. For each year of participation, students receive a $350 scholarship that may be used for college during the regular or summer terms.
