School Named for Educator, Civic Leader and Human Rights Advocate
DALLAS–Community leaders, elected officials and students joined Trustee Ron Price and Superintendent Michael Hinojosa today at the Groundbreaking Ceremony for Harold W. Lang Sr. Middle School, 1678 Chenault Street.
The $25.8 million school, the 19th to be built under the 2002 DISD Bond Program, is named in honor of Lang, a DISD educator, noted scholar and historian, civic leader and a passionate advocate for human rights.
"Harold Lang Sr. was a role model to students and teachers who believed that all children could achieve academic success," said Price. "As principal of Lincoln High School, he took on the responsibility to ensure that opportunity was available for every student. Today we thank him for that dedication and recognize his legacy through the building of this new school."
The 170,000 square-foot school will house 1,200 students and includes classrooms for science, art, music and instructional technology. In addition, the three-story facility will feature career and business classrooms, a media center and gymnasium, student dining and food service areas. Jacobs/Pegasus is the program manager for the project. GSR Andrade Architects designed the school and Adolfson & Peterson/Rollins Construction is the general contractor.
The W.H. Gaston Middle School Advanced Orchestra performed at the ceremony. Gasston's cheerleaders and the John B. Hood Middle School JROTC also participated in the program.
In January 2002, DISD passed the largest education construction bond program in the history of Texas. The $1.37 billion program is funding 21 new schools, almost 60 additions that include early childhood additions to present schools, and renovations to nearly every campus in the district. Contractors are working on more than 140 school facilities, including new schools, additions to schools, and renovations to schools.
On Thursday, May 25, at 10 a.m., a groundbreaking will take place for the new Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, 2501 Flora Street.
