DALLAS—Fourteen candidates will seek five seats on the Dallas Independent School District's Board of Trustees on Saturday, May 13, with one running unopposed.
The seats currently up for election are: District 1, Northwest Dallas; District 3, Northeast Dallas; District 6, Southwest Dallas; District 8, Love Field, Northwest Dallas and Central Dallas; and District 9, South Dallas and Downtown.
The 14 candidates who are seeking a seat are: District 1, Edwin Flores (incumbent) and Linus Spiller; District 3, Leigh Ann Ellis and Lois Parrott (incumbent); District 6, Carol King Arnold, Marion Barnett, Jordan R. Blair, Stephen Poole, Walter Lewis Price, Carla Ranger and Joe Tave; District 8, Adam Medrano (running unopposed); and District 9, Bernadette Wright Nutall and Ron Price (incumbent).
In order to qualify for a board seat, candidates must be 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled, a registered voter, a resident of the state of Texas for 12 months and a resident of the trustee district for six months.
All of the Dallas board trustees are elected from single member districts to serve rotating, three-year terms of office. Serving without compensation, the DISD board members are charged with hiring the superintendent, approving the annual budget, adopting policy and evaluating district performance.
At the March board meeting, trustees voted to not hold an election for District 8 candidate, Adam Medrano, since he was running unopposed. He will become the District 8 representative after the May 13 election.
The district will hold a re-draw for placement on the ballot in the District 6 race at 3 p.m. today, Monday, April 10, in the Board Room.
