DISD's School For The Talented And Gifted Ranked Top In The Nation By Newsweek

1 May 2006

School of Science and Engineering is ranked eighth in the country

DALLAS—Newsweek Magazine has ranked Dallas Independent School District’s School for the Talented and Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center the top public high school in the nation.

The School of Science and Engineering, also located at Townview Center, was ranked eighth in the country.

"There are literally thousands of high schools in the United States," said Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. "To have two schools in the top ten, with one named the best in the country, is remarkable. My hat is off to the students, staff and principals at these two schools."

As reported in the May 8 issue of Newsweek, the top high schools do the best job in preparing their students for college. Current graduates from the Talented and Gifted Magnet and Science and Engineering Magnet attend some of the finest colleges in the country including MIT, Stanford, Rice, Oberlin and Carnegie Mellon.

"This honor belongs to the staff and students of this school," said Michael Satarino, principal at the Talented and Gifted Magnet. "There are other outstanding schools in Dallas and in Texas so to be named as the best in the country is beyond any of our wildest dreams."

Newsweek’s ranked 1,139 high schools in the country by adding the number of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests taken by students in 2005, divided by the number of graduating seniors at the school.

"We are all enormously proud to be listed as one of the top ten schools in the country," said Richard White, principal of the Science and Engineering Magnet. "It speaks volumes that DISD has not one, but two schools ranked in the top 10 in the United States."

The Talented and Gifted Magnet and the School of Science and Engineering were ranked one and two, respectively, in "D" Magazine’s list of 109 best high schools in Dallas, appearing in its April issue.

The Science and Engineering magnet is a U.S. Department of Education 2005 No Child Left Behind–Blue Ribbon School. The TAG magnet was a 2003 No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon School.

DISD had two other schools named as some of the best high schools in the country. W.T. White High School is ranked #133, while Hillcrest is ranked at #633.
