DISD Observes Cinco de Mayo

Activities and programs scheduled throughout DISD schools

DALLAS–Students in the Dallas Independent School District will be participating in several activities in recognition of Cinco de Mayo.

Cinco de Mayo marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Although the Mexican Army was eventually defeated, the "Batalla de Puebla" came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism.

Below are a few Cinco de Mayo events to be held in DISD schools:

• Oscar Campos, a bilingual teacher at Mount Auburn Elementary School, 6012 East Grand, recruited students and staff to work on and re-create the Battle of Puebla. The re-creation was captured on video and produced into a DVD. The documentary will be shown at the opening to their Cinco de Mayo program at 6 p.m. and again at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 4, in the school's auditorium.

• Julia C. Frazier Elementary School, 4600 Ross Ave., will host a Cinco de Mayo program with activities that include a king and queen contest, a decorating contest and a piņata contest. Other activities include Mexican dances and historical readings.

• Students at T.G. Terry Elementary School, 6661 Greenspan Ave., have scheduled a "Bandana Day" on Thursday, May 4, along with a coloring contest for the Pre-K-Kindergarten students. On Friday, May 5, the school will host a Cinco de Mayo program from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. On Monday, May 8, through Wednesday, May 10, they will have a piņata contest and on Friday, May 12, students will present assignments about Mexican cities.

• Charles A. Gill Elementary School will host a Mexican Potluck Fiesta for students, faculty and staff during the lunch periods on Friday, May 5, and also will have a fiesta dress-up day of traditional Mexican clothes or wear clothing in red, green and white colors.

• L.G. Pinkston High School will host a Cinco de Mayo program at 2:15 p.m., Friday, May 5 in the school auditorium. The guest speaker will be State Representative Roberto Alonzo. They also are having an art contest.

• Students from Reinhardt Elementary School, 10122 Losa Dr., will have a Cinco de Mayo play and ballet folklorico performances.
