Robert Cooke Buckner to Hold School Closing Ceremony

Farewell event will be held at 8:30 a.m., Friday, May 19 followed by a carnival

DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District will hold a school closing ceremony for Robert Cooke Buckner Elementary School at 8:30 a.m., Friday, May 19, 400 Ella Avenue.

Robert Cooke Buckner was a Baptist pastor, editor and civic leader. He is perhaps best known for his work as founder, president and general manager of Buckner Children's Home. Buckner also served as president of the Baptist General Association and was president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas for 20 years. He was the first editor and founder of the Religious Messenger later known as the Texas Baptist. In the area of education, he was founder of the first Negro high school in North Texas.

In 1970, the Dallas Independent School District built and named the elementary school in his honor. The school will be closing its doors after 38 years of serving students.

Following the school's closing program, an all-day carnival will be held for the students.
