DISD Announces 2006 Summer School Enrichment Programs

6 May 2006

Extended year programs provide a 'Summer Link'

DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District Extended Year Programs Department will host the 2006 Summer Enrichment Programs for students in grades one through 12.

The Summer Enrichment Programs are designed to provide cultural enhancement for students and broaden their knowledge and skills. More than 12 enrichment programs will be available to DISD students with the intention of maximizing their learning potential.

Among the many options available to students through the 'Summer Link' programs is Summer Science (4th grade only) that is a free, three-week, outdoor educational program for students who have just completed the fourth grade and who have a special interest in science, the natural environment and field investigations. This program runs June 1–22, at the Environmental Education Center, 1600 Bowers Rd., Seagoville. Another program, Summer in the City (grades 3-6), will have students participating in a series of summer excursions to prominent cultural centers, museums and parks throughout Dallas. Each excursion is designed to support specific Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and fine arts. This program will run June 6-29 at multiple locations.

One of the most popular programs is the Summer Musical Enrichment Program (grades 5-12) that runs from June 12-29. The Black Academy of Arts and Letters will conduct a three-week musical program for 150 students. The thrust of the program is to audition, instruct, enrich and rehearse in the areas of music, dance, theater and production (stage management, costuming, make-up and set design). The Black Academy of Arts and Letters is located at 650 S. Griffin St. near the Dallas Convention Center.

Another favorite is the Summer Chess Camp for grades 3-8 that is conducted by James Kemp Chess for Life, Inc. Students involved in the chess camp will be divided into two groups to learn to play tournament level chess while sharpening their problem solving and thinking skills.
