DISD Offers Summer Food Service Program to City Youth

Children Ages One thru 18 Can Receive a Free Lunch and Snack Every Day

DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District Food and Child Nutrition Services Department in conjunction with the Texas Health and Human Services department will sponsor the 2006 Summer Food Service Program from Monday, June 5, to Friday, July 21 (excluding Tuesday, July 4).

"The purpose of the program is to ensure the youth of Dallas will not go without proper nutrition during their summer vacation," said Deborah Owens, director of compliance, DISD Food Operations and Compliance Department.

Children and youth, ages one to 18, can receive a free lunch and snack each day, at any participating site, including:

• St. Matthew's Cathedral, 5100 Ross Ave.
• Youth World, 606 N. Edgefield
• Lakewest Family YMCA, 3737 Goldman
• Park South YMCA, 2500 Romine Ave.
• Moorland Family YMCA, 907 East Ledbetter
• Oak Cliff YMCA, 6701 S. Hampton Road
• Lighthouse Christian Academy, 5525 W. Illinois

Approximately 9,000 lunches and snacks will be prepared for distribution every week from the food preparation site.

The program also has provided summer employment for almost 100 food services employees throughout the district.
