Final performances scheduled for July 7 and 8 at the Naomi Bruton Theatre
DALLAS–More than 160 Dallas Independent School District students will perform in the musical, "Djaamana' Deen' (One Who was Lost and Found His/Her Way Back Home), which opens at 8 p.m., Friday, July 7, at the Dallas Convention Center Theatre Complex, 650 South Griffin Street, (corner of Canton and Akard Streets).
The students are participants in The Black Academy of Arts and Letters Summer Art Institute and DISD Summer Enrichment Program. This year marks the 22nd year of the Summer Art Institute and the fourth year for the district's Summer Enrichment Program partnership. Of the 382 Dallas area students enrolled, 162 are DISD students.
Students will perform in the musical that was created by actor/director Akin Babatunde, who also will co-direct with Curtis King, the academy's founder, president and the show's producer. Additional performances are Saturday, July 8, at 1 p.m. and at 4 p.m. in the Naomi Bruton Theatre at the convention center.
"The annual art institute and enrichment program has a direct impact on the students," said King. "The key word is enrichment. What the students learn during this time will help them in many aspects of their life for years to come, not just in the arts. They will have gained confidence, responsibility, and experience by working with seasoned professionals in theater, music, dance, costume, lighting and make-up," said King.
Admission is free, however, tickets must be picked up at the academy's box office between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturday between noon and 4 p.m.
For ticket information, please call (214) 743-2400.
The project is also supported in part by Peachez, Inc.
