Dallas ISD and Dallas Police Dept. Remind Drivers To Slow Down In School Zones

4 Aug 2006

Classes in DISD Schools Begin Aug. 14

DALLAS—With only a week left before classes begin, the Dallas Independent School District and the Dallas Police Department will make a call to drivers to observe traffic laws and reduce speed in school zone areas at a news conference at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at J. W. Ray Learning Center, 2211 Caddo St.

District Superintendent Michael Hinojosa, Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle and Dallas ISD Chief of Police John Blackburn will be present.

Classes in the school district begin Aug. 14, and more than 160,000 students are expected. In addition, the district will open 12 new schools this year.

Recent state statistics showed that more than 1.3 million Texas children a day ride school buses, which continue to be the safest form of highway transportation--fewer than 1 percent of traffic accidents in the state involve them. However, the most common time for accidents is when school buses are loading or unloading students. According to a National School Bus Loading and Unloading Survey, most children injured or killed while getting on or off buses are under the age of 10.
